Sumo Sushi Incorporated in Newport

Sushi was great for the price, the miso soup was incredibly salty though. The samurai roll was exceptional, though the "spicy" sauce may have just been Frank's red hot. Not a huge sushi eater, but I enjoyed it.

Incredible hand rolls, excellent fish we are never disappointed and always leave happy and full! Steve does a fine job!

Best quality sushi in town.

Great sushi and Korean food! The owner and staff are very friendly. After having his home made kimchee, I can't buy it from a store. Sometimes we drive 90 minutes to Newport, just to eat there.

Sumo is fantastic!! I am a local who works downtown and I always try to get here for my break if I have time. The owner is so kind and loves his craft! Come here if you’re looking to support a good man with a great small business.

Great customer service! Always have delicious sushi, favorite place to eat downtown! Also if you get a window seat toward sunset, it's a gorgeous view!

I never go to Newport without going to Sumo Sushi. The food is excellent and the chef is kind and easy to talk to.

Pretty good. I got the Sumo Sushi platter. Good selection, tuna, eel, California rolls. Not outstanding but a fine choice.

Nice service, the chef and owner are the same person and he is really nice and gentle.. The food is amazing and the service is really fast...! Now with the covid situation they are open and everything was perfect like usually.!

My son has been educating me to sushi. This place was the second place that I had sushi....it was better than the first place. We had something called crunchy crab...amazing. I am not an expert on sushi, but this place is worth the trip.

Love this place. The owner is fantastic and makes all the food. Never had any complaints. Always delicious. One of few spots I know up here to get a really good Thai bubble tea.

My family, friends and I have been frequenting Sumo Sushi since July 2001. We love the crunchy crab hand rolls, Andy Roll, Dragon Roll (one of the best I have ever had although many sushi places have this type of roll on their menu), the rainbow roll, amongst many others. Chef and owner Steve has always been friendly, attentive and along with his staff/family they make us feel welcome.This may not appear to be a fancy Sushi place but it's nice, clean and we like it. If you require fast service maybe you should sit by the Sushi bar or skip on laid back places like this one. :)

Sushi was bad. All food was microwaved in the back (heard the thing go off..) brought us something to "try" that we didn't order and didn't eat. Charged us for it. Hella expensive!!!

Sumo Sushi is the Best place for sushi in the state of RI. Great atmosphere too, and Steve, the chef, is a great person, as well as a great chef.

The owner is really nice and my sushi lunch was fantastic. My next visit, I'm going to have to try the Korean dishes on the menu.

Excellent food but this person is just so lost, had to repeat myself so many times to the point that I almost walked out. He tried to say I said something completely different from what I said. He was getting mad I had to keep repeating myself so he took a deep breath and made a face. My fault you have to work!

I loved this place. It is reasonably priced. The staff is amazing. It was a very calming atmosphere and it was an authentic experience. I HIGHLY recommend this place for anyone visiting the newport area.

Great atmosphere. Steve is a talented chef who makes his regular customers feel like family. I've been coming here for 11 years. My favorite sushi restaurant on the east coast.

Food was horrible Sushi had shrimp that tasted frozen, salad was yellow..Service was fine...will not be back

Great restaurant found on google map. It is very close to the marina/ boat show. I have been in the area for many years but didn’t know about this Japanese/Korean restaurant until today. Good food. Good owner/cook. He has a very cool style and has been in the area for 18 years. He doesn’t talk much but makes great Asian food. Makes me feel like home. Must try!

We enjoyed Miso soup and pork dumpling appetizers, and for our main courses we each had sushi and a few rolls. Everything was phenomenal. The chef/owner was incredibly friendly and the service was excellent. This is our new favorite spot in Newport. Well deserved 5 stars for Sumo!

We are big sushi fans, so thought of eating sushi at our vacation at RI. We went to this place after reading the ratings at google. This sushi place is the worst experience we have ever had. Everything including food, chef, hospitality was the worst. We ordered crunchy tuna roll, miso soup and a platter. All the food was microwave heated. Sushi was hard to chew and miso soup was a bowl of salt. On top of that the chef, waiter and the owner (all of them is just one person) was so rude and did not even take the order properly and also yelled at us.Guys if you are on a vacation to Newport RI, don’t even think of going to this place. I wish there was an option of rating negative.

Most amazing hidden gem downtown, legit Korean master with delectable dishes, great teas and even bubble teas, good sushi deals, and wonderful gallery of celebratory history!

Came at around 2 pm as 2 other diners were leaving, which left the place empty. My husband & I were asked to sit by the window rather than at the sushi counter. All the while, the chef/server/1-man-show was complaining under his breath & sighing very loudly. We asked if he’s closed but he said no - just had a busy lunch-hour and that he’s still open for business. Kind of strange but we stayed anyway.We ordered the miso soup, a futomaki roll & the Saba sashimi.Verdict: the miso soup was overly salty & microwaved. Futomaki was fine, nothing special. Saba - I was apprehensive at first because it had a yellowish hue & tasted a little strange. I’m used to top notch sushi (just for reference) & this Saba is not up to standard. I had half of it & prayed that I don’t get food poisoning on my vacation! Not recommended for sushi. Haven’t tried the cooked Korean food so can’t give an opinion on that. I say go check out other great restaurants nearby!

I had a chance to eat here while at a conference nearby. I was very impressed by the quality of fish and the presentation of my dinner. The chef clearly takes great pride in his food. I would highly recommend.

An awesome dining place for group less than 5. The Chief here is from Japan and he is a really nice person. The food he cooks is amazing. Sushi here are fresh and tasty. Price are fair and you get a view of the streets. There are many choices of food, many food other than sushi. Love this place

Amazing! The bulgogi was really well seasoned, sweet! The kimchi was sweet and tangy too! Very good service and the owner was really nice. Felt nice and cozy inside with really nice traditional Korean decor too!
